OLED screens are more widely available in ultrabooks than in previous years, but we still don’t recommend them if another option is available. In our latest round of testing, we found that resolutions from 2160×1350 (2K) to 2560×1600 (2.5K) don’t hurt battery life quite as bad as 4K, but they don’t provide a noticeable visual improvement, either. Higher-resolution screens are now commonplace, but not all of them are ideal for ultrabooks-the benefits of a 3840×2160 (4K) screen are hard to see on a 13- or 14-inch display and aren’t worth the significantly reduced battery life.
Display: We recommend a resolution of 1920×1080 or thereabouts. Keyboard and trackpad: It’s crucial that your laptop’s keyboard and trackpad are accurate and comfortable to use for long periods of time (even if you regularly use an external keyboard and mouse). Solid-state storage: A 256 GB solid-state drive (SSD) provides a decent amount of storage space, and many ultrabook models now start with 512 GB SSDs. But since a great ultrabook should last at least five years and RAM is soldered into the motherboard of most ultrabooks-and therefore not upgradable-we recommend 16 GB for our top pick and 8 GB for our budget pick. Memory: You need a minimum of 8 GB of RAM to keep everything running smoothly when you’re switching between programs, opening lots of files, and thumbing through browser tabs. If you’re primarily using an ultrabook for document and spreadsheet work and video calls, you’ll benefit more from the longer battery life offered by the U-series processors, so we recommend them over P-series wherever they’re available. Intel also offers faster processors that end in P instead of U, but we found that these run hotter and burn through battery faster. Processor: A 12th- or 13th-generation Intel Core i5 U-series processor or a 6000- or 7000-series AMD Ryzen 5 processor is powerful enough for most work. Battery life degrades over time-and most ultrabook batteries cannot be easily replaced-so the more a laptop starts out with, the better. We want to see at least 8 hours of battery life in our tests with that much battery life, you won’t have to worry about rushing to find an outlet at the end of the day. Battery life: A great ultrabook must survive through a day of work away from an outlet. Generally, we look for ultrabooks under 3 pounds there’s a noticeable difference when you’re handling a laptop that weighs more. It needs a 12- to 14-inch screen-large enough for work but small enough that the laptop can slip into a backpack. Size: An ultrabook should be as thin and as light as possible, but a well-built, slightly thicker laptop is better than a thin one that feels flimsy or has poor battery life. #HP SPECTRE LAPTOP SKIN FULL#
If you want the full experience of putting your laptop together, you can choose from a wider variety of parts with the DIY Edition. We recommend adding another 8 GB of memory to the base model of the Framework Laptop 13.
#HP SPECTRE LAPTOP SKIN UPGRADE#
Compared with our top pick, the Framework Laptop has hours-less battery life-though you can replace or upgrade the battery in a few years when it wears out, unlike our other picks-and its webcam isn’t quite as flattering.
The Framework is an excellent laptop-it’s sturdy, surprisingly thin and light for how modular its design is, and it has a reliable keyboard and trackpad and a bright and spacious display.
So far the company is off to a great start, having launched with 11th-gen Intel processors in 2021 and followed through with mainboard upgrades for 12th- and 13th-gen processors in 20. If the company goes under, then the Framework Laptop is just like any other laptop when it wears out-you’ll have to replace the whole thing. But this promise depends on Framework continuing to exist and supply parts. It’s really easy to repair and upgrade, which means you can make the laptop last longer without replacing the whole thing, theoretically saving you money and creating less e-waste over the years. Most ultrabooks are not designed to be repairable or upgradable, but if you want a more sustainable option, we recommend the Framework Laptop 13.
